General Information
I’m pretty certain that writing about yourself might just be one of the most difficult things to do. Despite the fact that I spend much of my life writing for other people (and even for myself for enjoyment’s sake), attempting to describe who you are and what you do in three paragraphs or less without coming off as being incredibly pompous or utterly daft… not easy! But, I suppose I’ll take this opportunity to do what I can in that regard.
At 28 years old, I’ve spent much of my life on the road. For the first 18 years I was bound by my parents respective careers as a military child and from there I truly caught the music bug. Having been introduced to punk rock some 17 years ago now, I spent much of my late teens into my mid-20′s on the road. I’ve lived in such cities as Boston, NYC, Atlanta, Los Angeles/Encinitas, Toronto, Montreal, and the list goes on. At present, I’m spending the next while in Edmonton where my younger brother was recently engaged. I’ve taken up revamping the web positions for a few local shops which I will speak of in the near future. Just keep your eyes peeled for updates and information as it comes down the pipe.
Currently, as it has been for much of my life, I’m driven by independent culture, design, and literature. I was never all that great at skateboarding but it’s had my heart for two decades now. It wasn’t so much the desire to excel beyond the levels of those around me, as it was the freedom to just go. I had the ability to throw a Bad Brains or Supertouch tape into the walkman I consistently copped from my mother, hit concrete, and push myself in a way that only mattered to me. In doing so, I found a few true friends… kids like me whom though different in many ways, simply “got it”. Some of us had mohawks and shaved heads, others rocked messed up Wu-Tang shirts that were three sizes too big. None of it mattered though, we all found our inspiration in the streets. In truth, I suppose I was always much more inspired by the artistic and bold nature of skateboarding, than expanding my trick based skill set. To say that skateboard artists and designers have always been revolutionary would be an understatement. Years back, it wasn’t a revolution… it was like a fucking atom bomb! You don’t have to spend much time looking around you to realize that this continues today with skate culture at the forefront of independent fashion and the counter culture as a whole. Open your eyes, it’s there.
When all is said and done, I’m just happy that I’ve been able to play a part in it, in some form or another. By way of design, sound, culture, and sheer brash attitude, it will always be in my blood. Nothing in my life has given me the freedom and confidence that seven sheets of plywood atop four chunks of urethane has. It’s forever linked to my very being, it’s who I am.
